Grand Theft Auto VI is just around the corner—it's scheduled for November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S . After years of intense secrecy, the developers have finally lifted the veil, allowing Edge magazine journalists to explore the game's latest build.
The scale of the project is staggering: thousands of specialists from various departments of the company worked on it, and development lasted for more than ten years, drawing on the experience of creating Red Dead Redemption 2 .

The game takes place in the fictional state of Leonidas, inspired by Florida, and one of the key points on the map will be the iconic Vice City. According to Rockstar , the total land area will be almost comparable to the combined maps of GTA 4 , GTA 5 , and Red Dead Redemption 2 .
However, the developers emphasize not gigantic scale for the sake of numbers, but deep detail. The studio's main goal is to create an environment where any casual stroll can turn into an unforgettable adventure without pre-scripted settings.

Development director Aaron Garbut emphasizes that the game will feature significantly more interiors than previous installments in the series. And this isn't just about stores or story points. The houses are filled with household items, photographs, and details that create a sense of the occupants' real presence.
Example from the game: During a test, Garbut wandered into a house he'd stumbled upon. Inside, he found family photos with a dog, and in the next room, traces of the mess left by a pet left alone for an extended period.
To ensure the hero reacts organically to such details, the developers implemented a system of reactions to unpleasant odors, adapting it to a wide variety of situations.

Leonida's inhabitants were created from scratch by a dedicated team in Los Angeles. Instead of using formulaic procedural crowd generation, Rockstar imbued the characters with approximately 600,000 unique animations .
Random Event: During the demo, Jason stared too long at a passerby with a dog. The man took this as a threat, started cursing, and let the dog off its leash. After a short chase, the dog calmed down and returned to its owner, and Jason calmly lit a cigarette—all of this happened in the open world, without triggering a mission.

The weather system in GTA 6 has moved away from the old fixed scenarios. Clouds now move independently, and the atmosphere is affected by wind, humidity, time of day, and even season.

The wanted list system has undergone revolutionary changes. Now, eluding the cops by simply "waiting for the timer to run out" is no longer an option.

Unlike GTA 5 , where the heroes acted separately, Jason and Lucia share a common past.
Players can switch between them, but the characters have a four-level intimacy scale . Spending time together (strolling along the beach, going to the gym, or simply driving around the city) strengthens their relationship, which directly impacts the plot. They won't be separated forever: they are partners in the criminal underworld, trying to build a shared future.
The new Criminal Profile mechanic tracks heroes' actions on a scale from "Professional" to "Incorrigible."
The player is free to choose their own style: instead of killing every enemy they encounter, they can intimidate them or perform non-lethal knockouts. These brutal decisions shape their profile and influence the story's ending.

Rockstar has provided opportunities not only for fans of gunfights:

Over the course of more than a decade, the Rockstar GTA 6 team, led by Rob Nelson and Aaron Garbut, has strived to combine scale, unprecedented detail, and cinematic storytelling into a cohesive experience that sets a new bar for the video game industry.
